Antique Chinese dragon swords have always been revered in China, but their beauty and craftsmanship have also made them sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts world-wide. These swords are shrouded in tradition and intrigue, and the stories behind them often captivate those who collect them. In this blog post, you will find a brief guide to the world of antique Chinese dragon swords, from how to identify an authentic piece to the types of swords available and the history behind them. You will also learn how to care for these ancient artifacts so they can be enjoyed for many generations to come!

    A Rich & Unique History

Chinese dragon swords have a long and storied history, and are deeply embedded in Chinese culture. The dragons themselves are symbols of power, strength, and good luck. The swords were first crafted during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD) to serve as a symbol of imperial authority. Over the centuries, they have become more ornate and intricate, with carvings of dragons on their hilts and blades. They are highly desirable amongst collectors for their unique beauty, detailed craftsmanship, and rich historical significance. Today, antique Chinese dragon swords remain highly prized possessions among martial arts practitioners as well as collectors.

    Identifying Antique Chinese Dragon Swords

Antique Chinese dragon swords are popular with collectors and martial artists alike. Identifying an authentic antique Chinese dragon sword might seem impossible, but with the right knowledge and research, it is possible to make sure that the item you have is genuine. To start, you should always examine the blade, hilt, and handle for cracks or chips. The condition of the sword can tell a lot about its origins and authenticity. Next, take time to research the provenance of the piece and compare markings alongside historical records.

Antique Chinese Sword Styles & Purposes

Antique Chinese dragon swords are known for their intricate designs and unique characteristics. There are three types of antique Chinese dragon swords that are most commonly found – jian, dao and qiang. Each of these swords has its own unique characteristics and is used for various purposes such as fencing, slashing, or piercing. The jian sword is characterized by a slim and straight double-edged blade, the dao sword by its single-edged curved blade, and the qiang sword by its slightly shorter length and wider width compared to the other two swords. The Han Dynasty Jian, Ming Dynasty Dao, and Qing Dynasty Qiang are some of the most iconic examples of Chinese swords throughout history. All three of these swords have a deep-rooted cultural significance that is still highly appreciated by collectors around the world today and are consistently sought out for their remarkable craftsmanship and design.

    Instructions for Cleaning

An antique Chinese dragon sword is a valuable and delicate item that requires special care in order to keep it in pristine condition. It is not necessary to sharpen the blade but if it is used at all it will lose its sharpness and may require additional maintenance. The sword can occasionally take a small amount of polishing, done carefully with steel wool. When it is time to store the sword, the tang should be covered with a cloth or piece of elastic band (a hair band) so that it does not rust or corrode. If you would rather put it out on display, be sure it is secure in the display area to avoid accidents or damage. In some cases, collectors prefer a closed glass display case with a soft casing to hold the sword for optimal viewing.
