Helena and Beryl McKeever met when they were teenagers at Fort Benton Methodist Church in Missoula, Montana. After graduating from high school, Beryl joined the Army ROTC and attended Montana State University. Later, they would marry and move to Missoula. Beryl was a member of the 1950 and 1951 Montana State Championship basketball teams. They later met their future spouse, Maxine McKeever.
In the 1980s, Beryl and Thom traveled to Feathered Pipe Ranch in Montana, where they studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of the ashtanga yoga vinyasa method. While there, they also followed Pattabhi Jois on a tour of California. They studied with him from 1987 to 1990.
